Why Jantar Mantar 2.0 Protest Site Was Shifted

Did you know that Delhi Police has taken Jantar Mantar off its list of approved protest sites? An order dated October 11, 2026, made the change. A reported official notice followed on October 12. Many people are now asking one simple question: why? After the Jantar Mantar 2.0 Protest, why is there a new place for protests, public order, and your right to gather peacefully? Why does it matter to you? If you ever plan a march, a sit-in, or a meeting in Delhi, the place you choose may now be different. Let us look at what is known, and also what is still not known.

Why Was Jantar Mantar Removed?

The move followed advice from a committee made by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Its job was to find other places for public protests. Reports say the worries were noise, dirty surroundings, traffic jams, and the effect of big crowds on people living nearby.

Think about the location. Jantar Mantar is in Central Delhi, where busy roads, shops, and homes stand close together. When a crowd stays for many days, daily life around it can become hard.

But there is a problem. We do not have the full committee report. So these worries are only what the online reports say. They are not confirmed conclusions of the committee.

Where Can People Protest Now?

Delhi Police has named three new grounds:

  • Ramlila Ground in Central Delhi
  • Burari Ground in North Delhi
  • CBD Ground in East Delhi

So after the Jantar Mantar 2.0 Protest, organisers cannot depend on the old status of Jantar Mantar. They must check the rules for these grounds.

Here is the next big thing to watch: a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). What is an SOP? It is a written list of steps that police and organisers must follow. Delhi Police says updated guidelines are coming. They should tell people how to ask for permission, how many people can come, and what rules organisers must follow.

Until the SOP is officially published, do not guess. The three grounds may not have the same size, facilities, or permission rules. A place name alone does not tell you how to hold an event. So if you plan a protest, the safest step is to wait for the official document and read it carefully. Also ask the police office about the ground you want to use.

Did Recent Protests Affect This Decision?

The timing makes people curious. Over the weekend, the Jantar Mantar 2.0 Protest reportedly took place in Delhi against the Election Commission of India and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police action followed. Was this the reason?

No proof says so. No official statement, committee record, or reliable report links these protests to the removal of Jantar Mantar.

The same report also mentions court cases about protest limits, detentions, and public transport steps linked to these demonstrations. They may help us see how Delhi manages protests now.

Can People Challenge This New Rule?

Yes, the right to protest still exists. Removing a place from a list does not end it. Article 19(1)(b) of the Constitution gives Indian citizens the right to gather peacefully, without arms. But this right has reasonable limits, including limits for public order. What does “reasonable” mean? It means a limit must have a fair reason and must not go further than needed.

Authorities may control protests and set legal conditions for using public places. Still, their decisions must follow the law. If organisers feel a rule is unlawful or blocks their rights without good reason, they can ask a court to review it.

The new order reportedly changes Delhi Police Standing Order No. L&O/48/22, dated April 28, 2022. That older order made Jantar Mantar an approved protest site.

Is any court already hearing a direct challenge? Cases in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court deal with protest restrictions. But it is not confirmed that either court is hearing a challenge to this October 2026 order. An old case about earlier limits is not the same as a case against this venue change.

To understand the full position, read the following: the revised SOP once published, and the court records. They will show the legal reason for the change, the rules for organising protests, and whether anyone is challenging it in court.
