12 Countries On Alert After Hantavirus Cruise Deaths

Something very unusual happened on a cruise ship. A dangerous virus called hantavirus was found on the MV Hondius — a ship that travels to cold, faraway places. The ship left a port in Argentina called Ushuaia on March 20, 2026. It had 88 passengers and 59 crew members on board.

After some time at sea, several passengers became very sick. They had serious breathing problems. Doctors found that a type of hantavirus called the Andes strain was making them ill. Some ports did not want the ship to dock because they were scared the virus could spread to more people.

Health teams from many countries quickly started working together. They wanted to find all the passengers who may have been exposed, get them medical help, and stop the virus from spreading further. This cruise ship hantavirus outbreak became a serious international event.

Confirmed Cases, Deaths, And Emergency Medical Evacuations

So far, seven people are known to have gotten sick. Two of these cases were confirmed by lab tests. Five more people are under testing for possible hantavirus infection.

Sadly, three people have died. This makes the cruise ship hantavirus outbreak one of the worst travel-related hantavirus events in recent years.

The first person to die was a 70-year-old man from the Netherlands. He passed away while still on the ship in April. Soon after, his wife also died in Johannesburg, South Africa, after being flown off the ship for medical care.

A third death was confirmed — a traveler from Germany — while the ship was still under health restrictions.

A passenger from the United Kingdom is currently in intensive care with serious breathing problems.

Several other sick passengers were flown to hospitals in Europe for special treatment. Germany, the Netherlands, and other countries helped arrange these emergency transfers.

Doctors first noticed symptoms during the voyage. Over the following weeks, more people became seriously ill. Health teams then began the big job of finding every person who may have been near an infected passenger — in cabins, dining areas, buses, or group tours.

Why The Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak Is Different From Normal Hantavirus Cases

Hantavirus usually spreads when a person breathes in tiny particles from rodent urine, saliva, or droppings. You mostly hear about it in rural areas or old buildings where rats or mice live.

So here is what made this cruise ship hantavirus outbreak strange — investigators checked the ship and found no big signs of rodents. No rats. No mice droppings. Nothing obvious.

Lab tests showed the virus was the Andes strain. This is very important because the Andes strain is the only hantavirus type that can sometimes spread directly from one person to another.

Scientists are now trying to find out if sick passengers passed the virus to others on the ship. Passengers spent a lot of time close together — in small cabins, shared dining rooms, and indoor areas. If person-to-person spread happened here, that would be a very big and rare finding.

This is why health experts around the world are paying close attention. Finding out the cause helps prevent future outbreaks.

Why 12 Countries Are Monitoring The Hantavirus Situation

You may have seen “12 countries” in news headlines. This does not mean hantavirus is spreading in 12 different countries. It simply means that passengers came from over 20 countries, and some got off the ship at different stops during the trip.

Because of this, many governments started carefully watching for new cases. Countries involved include Argentina, South Africa, Spain, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

Health officials are mainly checking if people may have spread the virus after leaving the ship — through flights, hotels, or contact with family and friends.

After leaving the ship near Saint Helena, one passenger was diagnosed. This worried officials because it showed that possibly infected people had already traveled far before anyone knew there was a problem.

Governments and hospitals are now sharing information regularly to find any new cases quickly and without causing unnecessary panic.

Symptoms, Treatment, And Health Risks Of Hantavirus

At first, hantavirus feels like a normal illness. You may get fever, body pain, tiredness, headaches, feeling sick in the stomach, and muscle aches.

But then, within a few days, breathing problems can begin. The lungs start filling with fluid. This is very dangerous and can get worse very fast.

Some patients seem okay at first — and then suddenly become very, very sick. Older people or those with existing health problems are at higher risk.

Right now, there is no vaccine for hantavirus. There is also no medicine that can fully cure it. Doctors give patients oxygen, fluids, and close monitoring in the ICU. Early care makes a big difference.

Passengers who may have been exposed were told to watch for symptoms for up to 45 days. If fever or breathing problems appear, they were told to get medical help immediately.

What WHO And Health Experts Say About The Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak

The World Health Organization says the global risk is still low. Hantavirus is not as contagious as COVID-19. The Andes strain can sometimes spread person to person, but this only happens with very close and long contact.

After sick passengers were identified, strict rules were put in place on the ship. People were asked to stay in their cabins. Medical teams checked anyone with symptoms. Before docking at ports, health screening and safety plans were prepared.

Scientists are still investigating — where exactly the exposure started, whether all cases came from one source, and how much human-to-human spread happened.

This cruise ship hantavirus outbreak is unusual and serious. But health officials want everyone to stay calm. The facts show this is not a global emergency — it is a rare event that experts are watching very carefully.
